2025 Person-Centered Language Guide

Description
Using more respectful language can improve communication and create more cooperative relationships. This guide describes outdated language and provides suggested alternatives for person-centered language that recognizes the diversity of our community, preserves people’s dignity, and allows us to make connections with others. These suggestions put the person first and avoid negative words that may unintentionally demean, diminish, or dehumanize a person.
