It’s Not Denial or Refusal. It’s Anosognosia.

Description
Thursday, August 20, 2026. 12-1 PM Eastern Time. Often misunderstood, Anosognosia is a neurological condition easily confused with stubbornness. In this 1-hour presentation, Shadi Gholizadeh, PhD, MPH, will provide an evidence-informed, person-centered overview of anosognosia in the context of dementia that will help guardians understand and act to achieve better outcomes.

Participants will learn how anosognosia differs from denial, why insight may fluctuate or be absent due to brain changes, and how this understanding can support more compassionate and effective communication. The session will also explore practical strategies for reducing conflict, preserving dignity, supporting engagement in care, and balancing autonomy with safety.

This webinar is offered free of charge. Registration is required. 1 CEU from Center for Guardianship Certification will be awarded.
